The story of the Titanic and the iceberg has grown into a legend of the sea. It took her discovery in 1985 to begin to find the truth behind the myth. The order to proceed with Titanic's construction was officially given on April 30, 1907. Building began in the Spring of 1909, on March 31st in the Harland and in Belfast, Ireland. Three thousand men labored for 2 years to complete the largest man made moving object in the world. Her height from bridge to keel was equal to a ten story building. Two workers lost their lives in construction accidents during Titanic's building. Her total cost in 1912 accumulated to approximately 7.5 million dollars.

On April 10, 1912, the RMS Titanic set sail from Southampton on her maiden voyage to New York. She was the largest and most luxurious ship ever built. At 11:40 PM on April 14, 1912. Less than three hours later, the Titanic plunged to the bottom of the sea, taking more than 1500 people with her. The remains of the Titanic were found in 1985 by Dr. Robert Ballard, an oceanographer and marine biologist with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.

Since that monumental day numerous search teams had returned to the area and ever advancing technology has allowed scientists to recover items from the ship's debris and film incredibly detailed underwater shots of the tragic ship.

Three thousand men labored for 2 years to complete the largest man made moving object in the world. It weighed 66,000 tons and was equivalent in length to four city blocks. Her total cost in 1912 accumulated to approximately 7.5 million dollars at that time. Rising 50 feet above these funnels were the aerial wires for her wireless radio supported by two 70 foot masts positioned at the bow and stern of the ship.

Titanic was also had a unique fire detection system. A fireman was stationed there 24 hours a day and was never more that 6 feet away from his post. A suction system drew air from the stations back into the glass case. A filament of foil was in the case to let the observer know that the suction was activated by vibrating back and forth from the air flow. Hydrants and fire hose were strategically placed throughout the ship.
